Knowledge is power – pH level

July 19th, 2012

Measuring the pH level in skin and body care products is extremely important for all manufacturers, these products include soap, creams and bubble bath etc.

The pH of the combined ingredients indicates the overall acid / alkaline level. When a formulation is too acidic it can be considered an irritant on the skin.

pH means “Potential of Hydrogen” and refers to the degree of acidity or alkalinity in our outer skin layers. It is measured on a scale ranging from 0 to 14 where the centre of the scale (7) is neutral and a reading below 7 indicates that the substance being measured is acidic and above 7 is alkaline.

Your average “on the shelf” bars of soap are usually very alkaline, so using them can increase skin alkalinity above its natural levels. Soap bars can have a pH of up to 9, leaving an alkaline residue on the skin that leaves it dry and vulnerable to further damage.

That tight feeling you get after washing your face with a soap or a product is by no means a good thing.  It is important to know that alkalinity  also plays a role in aging.

Thankfully, excessive alkalinity can be easily addressed. Stop using soap and harsh products, make sure that the products you are using are tested.

Remember that even though a product is natural / organic the pH level must be measured.
