Trial and Error

August 1st, 2010

Often I am asked how and why I started the business and how I get the recipes etc. etc. etc.

Firstly, a very good client of mine suggested I try and make my own body scrub as the one I was using in the salon was so overpriced. I was then inspired by Tam who started her own range and a contact in Australia who had an online shop with her own brand.

In my past life I was in medicine (don’t freak out), I am a believer with a very open mind LOL

As a beauty therapist, aromatherapist and reflexologist I have much knowledge on skin, essential oils, beauty, body care etc. At class you are taught the basics on making your own products.

I’d like to clear something before I go on.  I follow formula’s not recipes, please – I am not a chef. If my products were anything like my cooking, I’d have no brand.

I am very, very fortunate to have two wonderful people that assist me with formula’s and are always ready to help me with advice etc.  Arnold a pharmacist assists me with my formulas and lab testing for my face and body range. Jackie provides me with detailed info on certain ingredients.  Not all ingredients are “user friendly”, some don’t gel to well with others and there is a need to know HOW, WHY and WHEN to mix.

A lot of my product making is also trial and error. I blend, mix, add, dilute etc and only once the product is 100% and tested on a client base is it good to launch.

I don’t just get a brain wave, jot it down on my pad and then dash to the kitchen and start mixing. Their is a lot of thought and process that goes into having a skin and body care range. There are also a lot of rules and regulations that need to be followed with regards to hygiene, labels, preservatives, essential oils, natural or organic etc. (but that I’m afraid is for another post).

I’ve always wondered how people figure out how to make their own products like this. There is so much to consider. I would never have the patience and seriously admire those of you who do such an amazing job.
